A wall hanging decoration by Lu Lucker

Hi everyone, its my turn (Lu) for a tutorial here today.  I decided to make a special wall hanging decoration tutorial using lots of things from That Craft Place.

Lets start with a wheel that you  might have left over from some ribbon.  I've also cut out 2 shapes of the same size.

You need to glue a piece of the card either side of the wheel.  I used my hot glue gun for this, but think maybe tacky glue would have been easier!

I had already stamped and coloured the image I wanted to use.  This image is from Creative Expressions, Stamps to Die for and designed by Sue Wilson.
Picked all the yummy ribbons that I wanted to use.
Then started the really fun part of deciding how I wanted to decorate.  Before I did decorate, I wrapped a thin piece of ribbon around the wheel and glued a loop at the top, so that I could hang the decoration.
I used some sticky back tape to stick the organza ribbon to the hemp ribbon and then folded to create this look;
All held in place using my hot glue gun! I got burnt a lot making this!
I tied a bow to the top of the ribbon that you will use to hang your decoration from and cut lots of die shapes to embellish. This is the back with the sentiment.

This is the front with the coloured image. I've also used frontage, flowers, string beads/pearls and gems, all of which you can get from Lisa in her store.

I hope you like what I have made.

Ring Binder tutorial by DT Trudie

Today is my designated day for a tutorial with That Craft Place.  Following on from Sandra's brilliant gate fold mini album tutorial, I am going to show you another way of making an album.  This time using the Tim Holtz ring binder and Gojuss papers from Docrafts.
You will need
2 6x6 chipboard (or other strong board) squares for the front and back covers
1 6x2 chipboard piece for the spine
1 ring binder with 2 brads
2 8x8 paper for outer covers
1 8x4 paper for inside spine    *after modification the paper is 6x4 ... this can be cut at the start.
1 8x5 paper for spine outside
2 5.75 x 5.75 paper for inside cover linings
1 inch and 1/2 inch double sided tapes
FullSizeRender

FullSizeRender[1]
Centre the spine and use double sided tape to adhere to the paper.
FullSizeRender[2]
Line up and centre ring binder and make holes all the way through for the brads to go.
FullSizeRender[3]
Turn over and fix ring binder to the paper side of the spine using the brads.  Run double sided tape down either side but do not peel back yet.  Train paper to fold and put to one side.
*last minute modification!  trim top and bottom of paper to line up with spine.
FullSizeRender[4]
Cover front and back covers with paper. .
FullSizeRender[2]
Line up front and back with the spine in the centre. Leave a gap approx. 4mm width between the covers and the spine to help fold.  It isn't possible to measure it exactly due to bulkiness   Make sure the covers face down and the ring binder faces up,  this is because we want the binder on the inside of the album!   Peel back tape and stick into place.
FullSizeRender[1]
The outside should look like this. Run double sided tape just down the spine and centre your 8x5 piece to cover the outside.  Once in place fold the binder carefully to create the creases,  now use tape to stick outside paper to the covers.  Fold carefully again.
FullSizeRender
Trim the top and bottom of the outer spine paper leaving 3/4 inch to fold over.  Use double side tape to stick down.  Use your bone folder to make folds in creases.
FullSizeRender[1]
Line the inside of the covers with the remaining papers using double sided tape.
I then added metal corners to the album to help strengthen and protect them.

Your album base is now ready to decorate and use!
I   hope this has made sense!

Tutorial

This is the fabulous MDF Large Desk Tidy before I got my hands on it!  It is of course available from That Craft Place!

Don't forget to let each stage dry (or use your heat tool) before you continue to the next stage!

GRAB WHITE GESSO & THE COSMIC SHIMMER PAINT (Russet Red):
1... Give all the pieces a thin coat of white gesso on both sides and the edges.
TIP: Avoid getting any paints on the tabs which slot together.  If you do, wipe it off.
2...  Once dry, sand the surfaces lightly.
3...  Apply 2 to 3 thin coats of the Cosmic Shimmer Paint to one side and the edges of all the pieces except the piece that forms the back panel.  Only apply the paint to the top edge of this piece.

- - - - -

THEN GRAB YOUR ACRYLIC PAINTS:

4... Paint blocks of colour on to the remaining unpainted surfaces.
TIP: I didn't paint direct onto the outside surfaces of the side panels.  Instead I drew round the panels onto thick cartridge paper and painted these.  This is so that once constructed, the tabs which slot into the side panels are not visible.

- - - - -

NOW IT'S TIME TO START PLANNING THE DECORATING!:
5...  Glue the cartridge paper (painted in the last step) to the side panels.  Trim to size.
6... Using bottle lids, drinking glasses or any other circular items (or a compass!) begin to lightly draw lightly with a pencil onto the panel fronts.
TIP: I found it helpful to slot the project together at this point.  It helps you to visualise the finished look and decide where to position the circles and other decoration.
7...  Take your stencil and very lightly mark where these will go on the panels. (I used a words stencil by That Craft Place at this point).

- - - - -

THEN:
8... Using the Dots stencil by That Craft Place I sponged a bright pink acrylic paint onto the panels.
TIP: Light sponging with a sponge dabber helps the stencilling to keep clean defined edges.

- - - - -

CONTINUE LAYERING:
9... Using the edge of an old credit or gift card, apply lines of paint in different colours.
10...  Start adding some colour to the smaller circles.
TIP: Rather than using a paint brush, I used a sponge dabber and kept adding paint to the smaller circles in a dabbing motion.  This added texture and therefore interest to the piece.

- - - - -

KEEP GOING, YOU'RE DOING GREAT! :
11... Apply a couple of coats of white gesso to the remaining circles.
12...  I also added a different colour to the smaller circles at this stage as I didn't like how the paler colour looked.  This is optional though.

- - - - -

STAYING WITH THE LARGER CIRCLES:
13... Build up a nice opaque covering of the bright pink paint (that we used for stencilling through the dots stencil earlier) round the outside of the circles, leaving the centres white for now.  Repeat for every circle.
TIP: You don't need to be too tidy in the centre of the circles at this stage.

14... Add a contrasting colour to the centre of the circles that we have just painted.
TIP: I chose to mix together an orange acrylic paint with some Cosmic Shimmer Paint in "Sunrise".

- - - - -

TIME TO ADD SOME HIGHLIGHTS :
15... Using a white Gelato (Colour "Coconut") I rubbed this over the join between the 2 colours in the large circles.
TIP: Add some to start and rub in circles, then add a little more a rub again to build it up.
16...  Apply more of the Gelato to the outer edges of the small circles.

- - - - -

NOW THE WORDS! :
17... Lay the Words stencil back over the areas where we had marked the word positions in step 7.
18...  Sponge black acrylic paint through the stencil in a light dabbing motion.

- - - - -

AND NOW THE FINISHING TOUCHES :
19... Using a white paint marker, outline the lettering.
20...  Also outline the small circles.
21...  Add faux stitching dashes to the top edges of the panels.
22... Using a black Inktense pencil, shadow round the large circles, using a water brush to smudge the edge slightly.

- - - - -

TIME TO CONSTRUCT! :
23... If you need to touch up any of the red painting done in step 3, now is the time to do it!
24...  Apply white glue to the outside edges of each divider & back panel & slot into the side panels.
TIP: I like to keep pressure on the sides for a couple of minutes to allow a good bond to form before continuing.
25... Apply white glue, this time to the bottom edges & slot into the base from the decorated side.
TIP: Again, keep pressure on the joins for a couple of minutes to allow a good bond to form. Let dry solid for a few hours. I usually leave overnight.

ENJOY!

Valentine's Memory Box Tutorial

Hello and welcome, it's Julie here from Juliz Design Post sharing with you my first tutorial at That Craft Place. I was lucky enough to attend an Andy Skinner Workshop last year where I learned lots of different techniques. You will see many of them on You Tube. This keepsake box uses some of his techniques and inspiration of my own, so let's get started.

I have had this little box that measures approximately 3 x 6 inches in my craft stash for a while and just knew it would look amazing teamed up with products and Bespoke MDF from Lisa's shop.

I started by giving my box a sand to get rid of any rough edges and applied my paint with a square of Cut and Dry Foam, which gives a much smoother finish.

I prefer to apply a thin layer of this product with my finger rather than a brush. Be patient waiting on this drying as using a heat gun it can start to bubble.

I next started to apply a medium layer of Crackle Paint with a brush, the magic begins almost immediately. Andy Skinner calls this his mega crackle technique.

Once dry I gave this a layer of varnish to seal the crackle.

Now where the fun begins to make this box look aged. I brushed over with a very watered down mix of Paper Artsy's gold paint and dried with my heat gun.

I rubbed over my whole box with my anti static bag (this stops powder sticking where you don't want it to) and rubbed around the edges with an embossing ink pad. Adding a mix of gold and bronze embossing powders and heating setting in place. Next highlighting the edges with a little more red paint to define.

Next I pressed my embossing ink onto my MDF Hinges and added gold shades of embossing powder. I started to melt with the heat gun and kept adding and sprinkling Distress Powder in Vintage Photo and a Verdigris shade until I was happy with the result.

Finishing them off with a little black paint scuffed over the edges with a baby wipe.

I used Craft Consortium's Red Roses Decoupage papers to line the inside of my box. My MDF Hearts were painted with the same red paint, I then added some embossing powder around the edges of the hearts in the same way I did the outer box. Next I added a layer of Deco Art Clear Crackle Glaze. Once dry I rubbed over with Deco Art White Antiquing Cream to highlight the cracks and added Ranger Chit Chat stickers.

My Cheery Lynn Photo Frames ( B673 Film Set ) were die cut out in Black Cardstock and heat embossed with clear powder to look like camera film. I used my scratchy tool on my Tim Holtz Lost Relatives photos to shabby them up.

The flat button from Creative Expressions I highlighted with a little Gilding Wax and added some red paint to my MDF word and glued both in place with Cosmic Shimmer Glue.

All the products used on my box are available at That Craft Place. I hope you enjoyed my tutorial and feel inspired to try out these techniques with the designs.
